Open Question: Stretching my lip piercing?

How easy is it to stretch a lower lip piercing? Is there a general "point of no return"?

I ask these questions because my (originally) 16g lip piercing self-stretched, or rather, stretched due to my constant playing with it, to 14g within the first six months of existing, and now, at two years old, is getting getting to be looser still. I'd like to stretch to 12g or 10g at the maximum, but need some pointers.

Should I go with the tried-and-true method of a taper and lube? Or is there a different method for lips? If you've stretched your lip piercing, how large did you go, and could you share your overall experience (stretching, jewelry preference, if you let it shrink back, etc..), please?
