Open Question: Anybody watch Crimewatch last night?

Got any knowledge to why the blade involved in the Jewelry robbery was wrapped with tape, along the whole blade including the blade edge? Yet the tip was exposed?
Was it so that he did not accidentally cut himself and leave blood at the scene?

I just want to know.
