Do you work in a department store? Or would you buy jewelry at a department store counter?

I'm starting soon at the jewelry counter at a national chain department store. I'm afraid that not enough people buy jewelry at department stores but rather go directly to a jeweler and that I won't be busy enough to both pass the time and to make decent money (I'll be working for a base hourly wage plus commission). What are your experiences here?
