Apart from rings that don't mean anything and are just jewellery, what types of rings are there? Obviously I have heard of engagement rings and wedding bands. I have also heard of promise rings, but I don't know what they mean. Are there any others? What are they for?

my g/f and i have been together for 10 months. yesterday as we were saying goodbye to each other from work, i pulled out of my pocket a out-of-the-blue present for her (a piece a jewelry i thought she'd like) but she just told me no thanks. we kept talking ...

It it inappropriate to buy more than one gift for your close friend's birthday if you got them an expensiveish but not very expensive piece of jewellery already? I mean to give a t shirt as well? Or is that embarrassing for people? Please be honest.
